Top tips for running in the dark

As the mornings and evenings become shorter, it’s time to dust off your high-visibility clothing and prepare your running lights as we brace for darker mornings and earlier sunsets.

Running in the dark potentially brings different challenges, and every runner should prioritise safety above all else.

Here are some essential safety tips for running in the dark:

  1. Maximize visibility

For any time of the day, your visibility is crucial, more so in the dark. Opt for bright-coloured and reflective clothing, invest in high-visibility gear, and consider wearable running lights. This ensures you are clearly seen by others while illuminating your path to avoid stumbling on obstacles.

  2. Run in a group

It's the perfect time to participate in group running activities. Run with a friend or better yet, join our lovely running club! There's power and safety in numbers, but you'll also share motivation and company.

  3. Choose your route carefully

Stick to well-lit routes whenever possible and always run against the flow of traffic. Dark, secluded lanes should be avoided as much as you can.

  4. Avoid distractions

Listening to loud music or wearing headphones can disconnect you from your surroundings. This can make you oblivious to potential dangers, so it might be best to leave those headphones at home or invest in some bone-conduction headphones.

  5. Plan your route

Before venturing out, always have a predetermined route just in case you need assistance. Let someone know where you're heading and your estimated return time.

  6. Carry important items

Never forget your phone or ID when running. You never know when you might need them, especially in an emergency.
