Junior Members.

At South Cheshire Harriers, we have a dedicated junior section, established in 2025 and supervised by coaches with the appropriate England Athletics qualifications and DBS checks. We hold weekly training sessions which are particularly suitable for our younger athletes (from 8 years and upwards) and our older juniors (aged 12 and above) can join in with some of our senior sessions. We also have a number of races and competitions (such as our local cross country league) throughout the year that we encourage our young athletes to train for and enter. See below for more info on each category and please contact us with any further questions.

Ages 8-11

When: Mondays 4:30-5:30pm at Crewe Vagrants, except for the first Monday of each month when we join the senior "Track Monday" at the Cumberland Arena 6:30-7:30pm.

What: This is a fun, inclusive weekly session where we learn the fundamentals of running. It's a great introduction to running and improving both technique and fitness.

Taster sessions are available before you join - please contact us via the website for more information (we do unfortunately have to limit numbers for supervision ratios and safety but always do our best to accommodate new members).

Ages 12-15

When: Mondays 4:30-5:30pm at Crewe Vagrants, except for the first Monday of each month when we join the senior "Track Monday at the Cumberland Arena 6:30-7:30pm.

Senior training Tuesday 6:30-7:30pm (intervals group most weeks - details are released each week on the private club Facebook Group which parents are able to join) and Thursday 7-8pm at Crewe Vagrants.

What: Our 12–15-year-old athletes are also very welcome to attend the Monday training sessions as above, however as they become more confident, it may be appropriate for them to attend our senior Tuesday night intervals sessions which are also overseen by our qualified coaching team.

Interval training is particularly suitable for young athletes as it develops running skills and good technique. Our training sessions are conducted on quiet local pavements or off-road so parents MUST take full responsibility for their child.

The following rules are in place to ensure the health and safety of our junior athletes:

  • Athletes 12-15 years old must be accompanied by either a parent or guardian or a designated responsible adult.

  • Run leaders (unless by prior agreement they are the responsible adult) do not accept responsibility for any U16 running in their group.

  • It is the parent or responsible adult’s job to ensure that the run leader for the group is aware of who is looking after each young athlete before the run starts.

  • The responsible adult or parent also continues to be responsible for ensuring that the U16 stays visible to them during the run.

  • The responsible adult must have emergency contact details for the parent or guardian of the U16.

  • If a parent isn’t going to be running with the child, then they need to ensure that the responsible adult who is going to be looking after them is happy to do so before each club run. Do not presume that a responsible adult is happy to look after a child just because they have done so before.

  • It is the parent or guardian’s responsibility to ensure U16s get to and from training sessions safely.

As the athletes develop, it may also be possible for them to join the senior "pace groups" on a Tuesday or Thursday evening. The same rules as above apply, and the athlete must be comfortable with running continuously for an hour. We would usually only recommend this for athletes aged 14+ and would ask that you discuss this with the coaching team for advice.

Ages 16-17

When: Track Monday - first Monday of each month 6:30-7:30pm at the Cumberland Arena

Senior training Tuesday 6:30-7:30pm (intervals group most weeks - details are released each week on the private club Facebook Group which parents are able to join) and Thursday 7-8pm at Crewe Vagrants.

What: Our oldest junior athletes can join in with our senior provision. If they are unable to run continuously for an hour, we would recommend starting with Track Monday and Tuesday Intervals - please discuss this (and any other queries) with the coaching team.
